COSTA MESA – Two men were killed in a fiery crash on the 405 freeway early Sunday involving a wrong-way driver, authorities said.
The incident was reported around 4:10 a.m. north of the 55, the California Highway Patrol said in a report.
A 29 year-old man driving a 2001 Ford and a 36-year-old man driving a 2004 Ford were killed.
The wrong-way driver was identified by the Orange County coroner’s office as Jose Garcia Lopez of Fullerton. The man in the other vehicle was not named.
The wrong-way driver was traveling south in the northbound lane when his vehicle struck the other car head-on, the report says.
The collision caused the 2004 Ford to catch fire. Both men were pronounced dead at the scene, according to the report.
The crash remains under investigation, and it hasn’t been determined why Lopez was traveling the wrong way.
